We have recently launched a new anti-spam filtering system - the Doteasy Email Protection System. This new anti spam service has now replaced the previous Doteasy Spam and Email Virus Protection Service.

Why is the Doteasy Email Protection System better?

The Doteasy Email Protection System is a versatile rule-based enterprise level anti-spam system. It is more flexible and scalable than the previous Doteasy Spam and Email Virus Protection Service.

One of the key features of the Doteasy Email Protection System is that it allows you the ability to allow each of your email users to set their custom spam threshold.

Powerful features include:

  • Simple-to-use - The web based interface comes in both Simplified and Advanced modes, allowing you to easily set custom filter policies and review spam quarantine.
  • Customizable - Each user quarantine account has the ability to customize their own spam threshold.
  • Flexible - In addition to black and white-list, you can set different domain, sender, host and file extensions filtering and deposition rules.
  • Reliable - The system can correctly identify and effectively block spam and emails due to virus or suspicious attachments. You can also generate interesting statistics on where spam is coming from.
  • Complete control - You control the frequency of notification emails as well as the display of your account web interface (quick-links, date format, number of spam quarantine messages displayed, message order, and much more).

If you are looking for a easy-to-use solution for anti-spam filtering and day-to-day email maintenance, then the Doteasy Email Protection System is perfect for you. The service is compatible with all Doteasy web hosting packages and is only US$6.95/month (on a 6-month billing term).

Background Info

1. What is a MX record?

An MX record is also called a Mail Exchange Record. It is a record in a domain name system (DNS) specifying how emails for that particular domain should be routed.

Each MX record contains a priority and a host name. Together, they specify which server(s) is to receive emails for a domain and their priority relative to each other (smaller preference number = higher priority).

Making Changes

1. Where do I make the changes?

You can make MX record changes using the DNS Panel in your Member Zone.

DNS Panel

**Any changes you make to your MX record or DNS records will interrupt your Doteasy hosting services (email and/or website). If you are not 100% sure, please do not change any of the settings. Instead, contact us and let us further assist you.

2. How do I change my MX record?

Once you have logged into your Doteasy Member Zone and selected the DNS Panel option from the Domain menu, scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see the Change MX Records section.

Change MX Record

** You will need to delete the existing Doteasy mail server entry before adding you new MX record.

3. How long does it take for the changes to take effect?

MX record changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate throughout the Internet.

Common Questions

1. I want to use Google Apps as my domain’s email service.

If you want to use Google Apps as your domain’s email service, you will need to change your MX records to point to Google’s mail servers.

  1. Sign in to your Doteasy Member Zone and go to the DNS record maintenance page.
  2. Delete the existing Doteasy mailserver record using the Delete function.
  3. Click on the Add button and enter the new MX records entries as per Google's instructions. Do not include the trailing dot (.). The Doteasy DNS Control Panel has been setup to handle all record formatting for you. Including the trailing dot as per Google’s instructions will result in entry errors.
  4. Save the changes.

Keep in mind that MX record changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate throughout the Internet.

2. Can I point my MX record to an IP?

It is not possible to have an MX record pointing directly to an IP address.

If your new MX record is an IP address, you will first need to create an A record for the IP address before you can setup the MX record.

To do so,

    1. Under Change A and CNAME Records, click on the Add button.
    2. Enter the hostname as the “Source” and an IP address as the “Destination”. When you are ready, click on the Submit button.
    3. Under Change MX Records, delete the existing Doteasy mail server entry.
    4. Then, click on the Add button to setup a new MX record to point to the A record you have just created.

Plus Addressing is a feature in your Doteasy SmartMail system that allows you to automatically filter your incoming email without creating content filtering rules first.

Assume your email address is, and you want to sign up for a newsletter called ACME News. Furthermore, you want that newsletter to go to a folder in your webmail called "ACME". With plus addressing emabled, all you have to do is sign up for the newsletter with the email address:

When the newsletter gets delivered to your email, it will automatically be placed in an ACME folder, which will be created automatically if it does not already exist. No additional steps are required. The whole process is automatic once you enabled the feature.

If you include the "/" characer in your plus address, you can automatically create sub-folders.

For example, your+Newsletter/ will create a folder called Newsletter and then create an ACME subfolder under it. Newsletters sent to this plus address will be dropped into this ACME subfolder.

To enable Plus Addressing:

  1. Login to your Doteasy SmartMail account using the Webmail Sign-In panel on our homepage,
  2. Click on Settings and select My Settings.
  3. Click on the Plus Addressing tab.
  4. Check the Enabled checkbox.
  5. Choose an Action to perfom when a plus addressed email comes in.
  6. Click Save.

Barracuda Network released their annual spam report yesterday.

According to their study,

1) The majority of business professionals view spam email as the worst form of junk advertising - worse than postal junk mail and telemarketing calls,

worst junk advertising

2) spam email accounted for 90 to 95 percent of all email in 2007, up from an estimated five percent of email in 2001

This is interesting.

Let’s pretend this is my business card:

demo business card

Traditionally, business card is a means to show people what you have to offer. Fallen in the right hands, my business card will tell people the basic information as to the service I offer and/or the organization that I am a apart of. It’s a great way to make sure people remember who I am.

However, looking at the card in a different light, clearly plastered on my business card are three nice and easy avenues for junk advertising - telephone, postal and email spam.
