DropUpLoad is a tiny, easy-to-use file upload application. Unlike other FTP clients,

  1. You can install and run DropUpLoad from a USB flash device. The application is only 300kb.
  2. You can create a “locked” version that limits connections to a particular server and encrypts all login information.

In other words, if you need to upload files whenever and wherever, or if you need to give another person access to your FTP but do not want to give out your Doteasy Member ID and password, you should give DropUpLoad a try.

FTP from a USB Flash Device

  1. Download DropUpLoad.

  2. Copy the entire DropUpLoad folder onto the flash device and start DropUpLoad from the flash device.

  3. Click on the New button to add a new server profile.
    DropUpLoad

  4. Enter the following on the Server settings window:

    DropUpLoad

    • Server name: YourDomain.com
    • Server Address:
      • $0 Hosting = ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com
      • Ultra/Unlimited Hosting = ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/mainwebsite_html
    • Login: your Member ID
    • Password: your Doteasy account password

*NOTE* If you need to upload files to a particular folder on your server, you will need to include the directory name in the server address field. For example,

    • $0 Hosting – ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/folder
    • Ultra/Unlimited Hosting – ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/mainwebsite_html/folder

  5. When you are ready, click on the OK button.

  6. Next, just drag and drop your files in the Drop here the files to upload box.

    DropUpLoad

And that’s all you need to do, there is no further buttons to click to upload your files to the server.

Locked FTP

  1. Click on the ? button.

    DropUpLoad

  2. Click on the Generate a locked version of DropUpLoad button.

WordPress is one of the more popular blog platforms out there and one thing I love about WordPress is the many widgets available: Akismet, Flickr, etc.

However, WordPress requires PHP and MySQL capability, which are not supported on the $0 Hosting account. But if you want to use WordPress and you do not want to upgrade your Doteasy hosting account, there are a few ways of doing so.

One way is to map your domain to your WordPress.com blog. Note that this option requires you to purchase credits from WordPress and you have to change your domain DNS to ns1.wordpress.com and ns2.wordpress.com.

Another way (a free and hassle-free way) is to use the free domain forwarding function on your Doteasy web hosting account to redirect your URL to your Wordpress.com blog.

Steps:

1. Signup for a free blog at www.wordpress.com. Your blog address will be yourname.wordpress.com

2. After you have setup your blog, login to your Doteasy Member Zone and click on the Setup Domain Forward function under the “Domain” section.

Setup Domain Forwarding

3. On the “Domain Forwarding” page,

Domain Forwarding

  a) Domain Forwarding: Select Enable

  b) Destination URL: enter the URL of your WordPress.com blog (ie. yourname.wordpress.com)

  c) Mask Option: this option allows you to display either your domain URL (ie. www.yourdomain.com) or the destination URL (ie. yourname.wordpress.com).

  d) Website Title: enter the title of your website.

4. When you are ready, click on the Save Change button.

After you have setup domain forwarding, your visitors going to www.yourdomain.com will be redirected to yourname.wordpress.com.

Benefits:

  1. You get to enjoy the powerful features of WordPress
  2. You don’t have to upgrade your Doteasy hosting account or purchase any WordPress.com credits
  3. You don’t need to install the script or configure any database. Everything is done for you by WordPress.com
  4. The Domain Forwarding function is free and you can disable the setting or modify it in your Doteasy Member Zone

Talk to most website designers and most will tell you to be weary of Flash contents when building your site. While the temptation is great to use Flash to deliver an impressive and flawless presentation to your clients, such usage may also bring about other problematic issues. Perhaps the most pressing one of them all is the fact that search engines, like Google and Yahoo!, are not able to crawl through the dynamic contents in a flash set up.  This makes it impossible for search engines to rank these webpages and link users to them.

However, times have changed and technology is starting to catch up. Adobe System Inc. has just announced that they are releasing a customized version of its Flash Player software, which enables search engines, like Google and Yahoo!, to “see” the elements of the webpages embedded in the Flash files. While they have been indexing static texts and links on Flash sites for some time now, a lot of the newer ones are generated on demand.  By improving what search engines' crawlers can recognize, it will enhance the user's search results.  It is exciting to see that search engines are starting to look beyond indexing static HTML and move into dynamic data.

What this means for web developers is that they don't have to avoid Flash like the black plague anymore and use it to establish aesthetically pleasing websites. With Flash, there's a higher degree of freedom than sticking with HTML as it allows designers to place objects anywhere on the page without limitations.  This also eliminates the need for contents to be rendered correctly in each separate browser. Flash can also provide site visitors better interactivity. A myriad of multimedia can be added to the website, such as videos and sounds,  to enrich the experience. This is especially helpful in the application of a demo video for your products or even a spruced up home video to show friends and family!

While this is quite innovative, it is still in the early stages of development and one concern that has been circulating amongst receivers of the news is that this technology would still not be able to bring users directly to a specific page within the Flash site. Only time can tell if this launch will be successful for the future of search engines.  Nonetheless, this provides web designers additional options and makes the searching process a whole lot more efficient! If you've never considered building a Flash website due to the lack of ability to be searched, here's your chance to try it out. Register a domain name with Doteasy today to get started!
