If you've ever wanted to rank higher on the search engines, you’ve likely stumbled on many guides on Search Engine Optimization, or SEO.

In general, most of the SEO guides will include a "good SEO" checklist:

  • Links
  • Content is King
  • Sitemaps
  • Keywords in your URL
  • H1 instead of H2

And you're probably wondering what about META tags.

Background Info

The META tag was a way to insert text into an HTML page that is only visible to search engines crawlers. Four of the seven major crawlers in the mid-1990s supported the META tag. Unfortunately, the tag was widely abused and many of the early crawlers dropped the tag from their ranking equation. Many people also believe that newer search engines never even considered meta keyword tags in their ranking logarithm.

So, is META tags really not worth the trouble or time anymore?

What Google has to say

As Google is the dominant search engine, we want to see what Google has to say about META tags.

Here are some articles found on the official Google Blog:

So, now we know Google does consider the Title and META description tags.

<meta name="description" content="A description of the page">

This tag provides a short description of the page. In some situations the META description is used as a part of the snippet shown in the search results.

<title>The title of the page</title>

Although the <Title> tag is not technically a meta tag, it is often used with the description tag. The contents of this tag are generally shown as the title in search results and in the user's browser when visiting the page or viewing bookmarks.

What about ALT attributes?

ALT tags are "alternative information" source for images on your website. Not all intended audience see the images on your website: people who have chosen to disable images in their browsers, people using text-to-speech browsers, and search engine crawlers. The Google crawler, or Googlebot, does not see your images but rather it looks at the ALT attribute for a text equivalent of the image to determine what it is about. Thus having an ALT attribute is useful especially for Google Images ranking.

The Doteasy Website Creator supports META tags and the Image Utility in your Doteasy Hosted Blog supports ALT attributes.

Even though META tags and ALT attributes do not play a big part in your search engine ranking, it's always better to have proper tags than no tags at all.

I am president of a largely Web/graphic design and SEO firm, and we insist on continuing to use meta keywords in all of the online projects we build. We have found great success with them. The key is simply not to abuse them. Keywords should match words in your site's visible copy.

Meta Tags are still important if you provide them with correct keywords and description. It would be better to say that meta elements may be important, but it depends on the search engine. For example, Google only uses a description if there's nothing better to display in the search results page. However, that's a bad thing as it suggests that your content is rather poor. Google ignores keywords entirely. The following are the common place for giving some important keywords in the sites An author would be better advised to worry about good content, rather than trying to find places to stuff keywords. Well-written text will contain them all naturally, anyway, and search engines are trying to spot, ignore, and even penalise fake-looking sites. That is, after all, why Google stopped respecting keywords in a meta element. 1.HTML Title The title of a document should be used to help the user understand where they are in a site. Not only does it help identify which window or tab contains the site they're looking for when working with more than one site or running application, but the site is also easier to find in history lists, and has a useful title in search results. 5. ALT tags The alt tag of images and other elements is an accessibility feature. It should act as a replacement for an image, nothing less. Besides, I've read that search engines don't index them, anyway. 6. Comment tags I find that dubious: a sensible search engine would ignore comments entirely. One location that hasn't been mentioned is headings (hx elements). A smart search engine will also weight the importance of the content within a heading by the level of that heading. However, that isn't an excuse to misuse them: write for the user, not for a search engine.

Even though you say that META and ALT tags don't play a big part in search engine ranking they are a must if you want your site to be seen in the Organic searches, but of no value in Sponsored searches.
